Normally, a wellhead is only a close distance to its separator shack and controller, or Scada RTU. The two locations aren’t far apart and using an armoured cable between them is quick and painless. For these cases, a normal Arrival Sensor may be used. However, sometimes the distance between wellhead and shack is too great or the trip between can be too difficult to traverse, causing great expense. In these cases, the best method is to install a Wireless Arrival Sensor. PIT is a proud provider of Wireless Arrival Sensors to assist with these situations.
OKC’s LinkMate Wireless Switch Router is PIT’s choice for Wireless Arrival Sensors. Safe, compact and durable, the LinkMate is a cost-effective and easy to use plunger arrival detection system for your wellhead to shack connection. Featuring four switch inputs and four switch outputs, a switch event occurs when any switch changes from an On to an Off state, or vice versa. The signal from the switch event is transmitted via omnidirectional weather resistant antennas and is connected to its paired device from up to 1000 feet away!
The system consists of two small boxes. One box is located in the shack and consists of the omnidirectional antenna. The second box contains the Arrival Sensor and the transmitter. Couple these with a solar panel for each box and you have a fully functional, easy to install, Wireless Sensor. The system is Intrinsically safe, Class 1, Div 1 too!
Why Use A Wireless Arrival Sensor?
Occasionally, wellheads and shacks will be a significant distance apart. Running large amounts of cable between the two locations can be extremely expensive and labour intensive. While a Wireless Arrival Sensor is more expensive than a few feet of cable, there reaches a point where the cost of the cable, plus the time and labour, no longer makes a wired connection feasible. This is where a wireless feature can save you a whole lot of time and money.
It’s been a busy couple weeks at PIT. Everyone is back from holidays now and it’s been a nose to the grindstone kind of month. We’ve got some new hires coming in, have been working on training some others, and rewarded a more seasoned employee.

FlowFit Modular Lubricator Release
A week ago we released our new FlowFit, Flow-T Replacement Lubricator. It’s a design we’ve been working on for quite some time, and we’re very happy with how it came out!
Traditionally, Flow-T’s can be a pain to remove and replace on a wellhead. The FlowFit drastically reduces the amount of time and money wasted during these installations. It’s an all machine forged, no weld design that bolts directly to the Master Valve and the Wing Valve. This means that the only thing that needs to be replaced is the Flow-T itself, allowing the valves to remain in place. The added convenience of the FlowFit lubricator can save up to $27,000 in costs for the producer.
Curling the Night Away
PIT has been a proud part of the Annual Red Deer Oilmen’s Bonspiel for many years. We are both a regular sponsor of the event and a regular competitor in the tournament.
This year the PIT Crew was represented by Mark Sutherland, Brett and Kevin Kroetsch, and Dan Boutin. This team has been a top contender in the past, often kicking butt and placing in the tournament. Unfortunately, this year the ice was against us.
The PIT team won their first match, placing them in the A level of the competition. They went on to play in the Saturday portion of the bonspiel and were eliminated Saturday evening. The team that beat them went on to win the entire tournament and we congratulate them on their victory.
We’d like to thank the community and the Red Deer Oilmen for allowing us to be a part of this fun and exciting event for another year.
A New Truck for an Experienced Employee
Those of you that have worked with PIT before will undoubtedly have met Laura-Gene Haga; or LG, as we often call her. LG has been a member of the PIT Crew for over five years. Located in the Red Deer office, LG works as our Oil Engineering Technologist. Always hustling and bustling, Laura-Gene can be found in the field just as much as in her upstairs office, showing us again and again just how hard of a worker she can be.
As a thank you for all the hard work she’s given us over the years, we wanted to do something special to show LG how appreciated she is. And nothing seemed better suited than a brand new Dodge for her to do all her business in.

Christmas is over. New Year’s Eve is only a few sleeps away. With all the party planning, present shopping, cooking, baking, decorating, and general merry-making, December is one hectic month. In the brief lull between holidays, we’ve managed to rouse ourselves from our turkey coma. Now it’s time to take a few moments to reflect on 2017.
So, how was our 2017? Well, for starters, we survived it. This year sometimes felt like a never-ending storm of global scandal, geopolitical conflict, natural disasters, and weekly crisis’. But hey, we survived! And if you’re reading this, you did too! That in itself is something worth celebrating.
On the PIT front, we’ve had a busy year. In the last half of the year, we saw our team expand more and more. Our staff numbers climbed ever higher in order to help service more wells, help assist more clients, and help the PIT ship sail more smoothly.
Our Cloud Controller (PitBoss Cloud) brought the Internet of Things and Big Data to many new locations and clients. It’s a revolutionary new technology that more and more people are discovering it all the time. It has near infinite uses and applications. It can move and process so much data that we are only restricted by how quickly we can add new uses and ideas to it! It’s our highest value product.
We rolled out our new FL3 fluid level automated unit. What started as an idea is now a fully functional unit capable of automatically taking fluid levels in almost any type of well. It can even send the data remotely if that’s what you need! Included in the unit is our new generation of Pump Off Controllers, Total Well Management when integrated to our Cloud Controller, plunger tracking, and more!

We had a jam-packed and fun-filled year at PIT. We were always busy but we love what we do so we can’t really complain! Most of all we’re excited to see what next year will hold. Are you ready for 2018 like we are?
PIT is well known for our plungers. We’ve supplied thousands of plungers to hundreds of companies and are always looking for ways to improve our designs. One of the issues that come up often when dealing with our clients, is how we should handle a well with an SSSV in extreme sour wells. Our 3 ½” Dual Pad Skirted Plunger* is a solution to this issue.
When a Sub Surface Safety Valve (SSSV) is triggered it isolates the well bore. This can happen when there is a system failure or damage to surface production, control, or safety facilities. When an SSSV has finished its life on the well, it can be removed. However, the landing nipple is still in place and is either very expensive or impossible to remove.
How did PIT address these issues? Simple. We created a Dual Pad Skirted Plunger capable of compressing far more than a non-skirted plunger. When compressed, the plunger is able to slip through the nipple. That way there is no need to pull tubing to remove the nipple and no need to spend thousands of dollars in the process.
The flexibility of the Dual Pad Skirted Plunger allows it to significantly increase the efficiency of your well. Not only is it able to collapse to fit through a nipple, it also expands further than a non-skirted plunger. This allows it to create a tighter seal to reduce gas and liquid leaks while traveling through the tubing.
The plunger has to travel regularly through the nipple. This means the plunger is built with durability in mind so that it may withstand the wear and tear that comes from passing through the SSSV nipple.
3 1/2″ Dual Pad Skirted Plunger Case Study
This 3 ½” Dual Pad Skirted Plunger (pictured right) was recently replaced in one of our customer’s wells. It ran on a 13% sour gas well outside of Olds, AB. During that time it removed hundreds of liters of contaminants from the well.
PIT builds our plungers hardy so that they can withstand extremely punishing conditions. This particular plunger made 12 cycles a day through the nipple and the rest of the tubing, expanding and collapsing whenever it was needed.

Purpose and Uses
Lubricators are a primary piece of surface equipment in the plunger lift system for gas wells. As gas wells mature the decrease in bottomhole pressure and production velocities that are needed to carry liquid to the surface. We solve this pressure problem with our top of the line plunger lift systems.
As the plunger travels upwards through the well, it surfaces and is caught by the lubricator. Our All Thread Lubricator is built to withstand fast rising plungers with ease and efficiency.

Loaded with a 170lb/in Inconel X750 spring and a 4140 L80 Striker Block, the lubricator’s parts are easily replaced when needed. Replaceable parts coupled with a simple, reliable T-Handle catcher make this lubricator the easiest item on your maintenance list.
Our biggest concern when designing our lubricator was to make it affordable for every budget. We made it our goal to make a budget-friendly lubricator with no sacrifices to quality for our customers. Just like all our lubricators, the All Thread Lubricator is designed by a registered professional engineer in compliance with API 6A Section 22.214.171.124. and undergo a strict testing regimen as part of Finite Element Analysis. The lubricator is then stamped for verification.
